2010 National Rowing Championships
The 2010 National Rowing Championships – a regatta that invites the best rowers from across Canada to determine a true national champion in the 1x and 2- for Men and Woman alike - were held this past weekend on Elk Lake in Victoria. Alberta had the third largest team in attendance at this event with 17 athletes (this was also the largest team to represent Alberta since the introduction of the National Rowing Championships in 2005).

In reviewing the results all our athletes should be extremely pleased with their performance. Consider the following:
3 Alberta athletes made finals in 2010 – 2 Alberta athletes made finals in 2009
8 Alberta athletes had top ten finishes in 2010 compared to 3 top ten finishes in 2009
11 Alberta athletes had top 12 finishes in 2010 compared to 4 top 12 finishes in 2009

All athletes raced hard and performance to the best of their abilities.

2010 Canadian University Rowing Championships
The University of Calgary Rowing Club made history at these championships. Jessie Loutit and Brittney Szwarc won the school's first ever medal in the fourteen year history of this event; a silver in the woman's pair. In addition, for the first time since the introduction of this event in 1997, the U of C registered crews in all 12 events.

Not to be outdone, the University of Alberta Rowing Club continued their strong tradition at this event with three crews/ boats racing in “A” finals. George Kostaras finished 5 th in the Lightweight Men's Single, Nicole Barbeau finished in 6 th in the Lightweight Women's Single and Frederik Norberg and Alistair Sarahs were 6 th in the Men's Pair.

And for those keeping score. The University of Alberta finished in 8 th place, ahead of the University of Calgary who finished 9th in the overall Men's Team standings. In the Women's Team standings, the order was reversed with the University of Calgary finishing in 8 th place and the University of Alberta finishing 12 th . Congrats to both programs.

2009 Head of Vermilion
On Saturday, October 3rd the Lakeland College Rustlers rowing team hosted approximately 90 rowers from Vermilion and Edmonton for their first ever regatta on home water in the Vermilion provincial park. The day was cloudy and cool with a slight breeze and a sprinkling of rain near the end of the last race but it was typical fall weather and nothing that the crews could not deal with...........

2008 Head of the Weasel
As usual, mother nature cooperated fully in the annual running of the Head of the Weasel Regatta. The Regatta uses a unique way to tabulate results. Winners are selected based on how closely they come to the Rowing Canada standard for their boat, weight, and gender class. This gives all a chance to compete against the best regardless of what class they happen to be in. I.e., a lightweight women single can in the same race triumph over heavyweight men's eight! See calgaryrowing.com  for full results.
